ON ‘ASHUURAH’: Fasting the day
of ‘Ashuura’ deletes your sins for
the past year, because the Prophet
(SAW) says: “…and fasting the day
of ‘Ashuura’ Allaah will forgive your
sins for the previous
year” (Narrated by Muslim:1162).
This is by the bounty and favour
that Allaah bestows upon us,
whereby fasting one day expiates
for the sins of a whole year.
The Prophet (SAW) used to be
very keen to make sure he fasted
on the day of ‘Ashuura’ because of
its great status. It was narrated that
Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be
pleased with him) said: I never saw
the Prophet (SAW) so keen to
make sure he fasted any day and
preferring it over another except
this day, the day of ‘Ashuura’, and
this month – meaning Ramadaan.
(Narrated by Bukhaari: 1867).
With regard to the main reason
why the Prophet (SAW) fasted on
the day of ‘Ashuura’ and urged
Muslims to do likewise is
mentioned in the hadeeth narrated
by Bukhaari (1865) from Ibn
‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased
with him), who said: The Prophet
(SAW) migrated to Madeenah and
saw the Jews fasting on the day of
‘Ashuura’. He asked, “What is
this?” They said, “This is a great
day, this is the day when Allaah
saved the Children of Israel from
their enemy and Musa fasted on
this day.” He said, “We are closer
to Musa than you.” So he fasted on
this day and told Muslims to fast.
ON ‘TASUU’AH’:
Bn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be
pleased with him) said: When the
Messenger of Allaah (SAW) fasted
on the day of ‘Ashuura’ and told the
Muslims to fast, they said, “O
Messenger of Allaah, this is a day
that is venerated by the Jews and
Christians.” The Messenger of
Allaah (SAW) says, “Next year, if
Allaah wills, we will fast on the
ninth day.” But by the time the
following year came, the
Messenger of Allaah (SAW) had
passed on, and departed this
temporary world (Muslim: 1916).
Imam Ash-Shaafi’iy and his
companions, Ahmad, Ishaaq and
others said: It is highly
recommended to fast both the ninth
and the tenth, because the Prophet
(SAW) fasted the tenth and
intended to fast the ninth.
Alhamdu Lil Laah: Let’s try share
this sunnah and pass this
information to our beloved ones-
parents, wives, children, relatives,
students, friends and associates,
so that Allah could forgive our sins
for the last year,…
