What is secularism?
Separating religion from the art of governance? Why then is Islamic calendar not in use officially in Nigeria like the Gregorian one.? One out of many instances of this kind of imbalance. The latter introduced by Pope Gregory in 1582. Where is fairness here.? One is likely to say “well, that was what the Colonialists did, we inherited it.” I will say: “Yeah my friend that is correct” So also the issue of maintaining Arabic letters on our currency was started by the same Colonialists when they were leaving. If we can tolerate that, why can’t we tolerate this?? Hope it is clear. But wait! Instead of misleading ourselves why can’t we say that Nigeria- our blessed motherland – is pluralistically diverse and heterogeneous socio-culturally and religiously instead of taking cover- yes taking cover- in saying it’s ‘secular’ only to uncover many loopholes in such a claim as exemplified in issue referred to above? May Allah give us the ability to cultivate the culture of LTLT that is LEARNING TO LIVE TOGETHER in tolerance and mutual respect.
